ANA Membership Info

We are an international group of writers who are interested in improving our craft. We write Fiction, Nonfiction, and Poetry. We have discovered that it is easier to critique each other's work if we all use the same basic parameters. Our assignments are designed to improve our skills and help improve our 'real' writing. Many of us have been scribbling for years, but haven't done much as far as serious writing goes. A number of our members have been out of school for a long time, and have forgotten the more mundane, but extremely important, aspects of writing -- namely: grammar and punctuation.

The most important focus of this group is to write and then to critique each other's efforts. Knowing someone has struggled with the same problems as you have, makes it easier to accept and give both encouragement and feedback.

We wish to make it clear that ANA is dedicated to writing. If you consider yourself a professional writer and wish to interact only with other professionals, then ANA is probably NOT the place for you. Portfolios mean very little here, although we rejoice when one of our members is published. All of our members are willing to take the time to help beginners and experienced writers with the same dedication. We do not make any distinction between an experienced writer or a novice.

We do, however, expect each of our members to put some thought and effort into the feedback they give to fellow members. While comments such as "Great Job" or "This is great," make the author feel good, they do little to help him/her improve.

Our members don't expect detailed feedback, but they do expect you to share your thoughts and feelings, to point out things you feel could/should be improved, and to tell them when/where they've written something you felt was particularly well done. We know many of you are "new" to writing feedback. ANA does not expect you to be an expert, but if all you feel you can contribute is "feel good" feedback, ANA is NOT the place for you.

We welcome all writers who are serious about learning, who are willing to take the time to read and critique our efforts, and who truly want to improve their writing skills.
